Tutorials - Warded Locks and Keys Explained

Warded keys are a master set of keys which will open every warded lock. Warded padlocks are identified by an irregular 'zig-zag' keyway. All one has to do is to try each key in your warded key set, by first placing the key in to the lock as far as possible, and then gently turning. If you have no success in opening the lock move the key out of the lock slightly and turn the key again. Repeat this process until one of the five keys pops open the lock.

The wards inside the lock prevent a normal key from releasing the locking bolt. With the skeleton keys however, it's only a matter of seconds before one of the five keys pops open the lock, every time.

Below is a diagram of a warded lock.
