Tension Wrench
A tension wrench is an essential tool in the art of lock picking, especially when picking the commonly used pin cylinder locks. In movies and television shows, people are almost always depicted as opening a lock without a tension wrench, which is virtually impossible to do. There are certain types of picks that are used without a wrench, such as a jiggler key, but anyone familiar with pin cylinder locks knows the necessity of the tension wrench. To pick a pin cylinder lock, the tension wrench is inserted into the lock first. Tension wrenches are shaped like the letter "L" with the vertical part of the letter being much more elongated than the horizontal part. Typically made of metal, tension wrenches can vary slightly in thickness, weight and length. The Purpose of a Tension Wrench The main purpose of the tension wrench is twofold: the first purpose is to hold picked pins in place, and when all the pins are set, the wrench is then used to turn the inner cylinder and open the lock. At Lockpicksonline, we always recommend that people start out with the lightest amount of pressure on the wrench. We've found that 90 percent of failed lock picking attempts are a result of too much wrench pressure. While our starter lock picking kit includes only one wrench, more advanced lock pickers may find they need several. They might also find that some pick and wrench combinations work better than others. Despite the challenge of the lock, many lock pickers find that they simply prefer a different weight or length. If you're not sure how many tension wrenches you need, just give us a call and we'll be happy to help you find out. Till then, happy picking!
