How
do I know which way the lock (plug)
turns?
To
unlock most key-in-knob style locks,
the plug will rotate in a counter-clockwise
direction.
To
lock most key-in-knob style locks,
the plug will rotate in a clockwise
direction.
To
unlock most deadbolts, if the bolt is
protruding to the left then the plug must
rotate clockwise. If the bolt is
protruding to the right then the plug
must rotate counter-clockwise. The
opposite is therefore true to lock the
deadbolt.
To
unlock a master padlock (unless there is
a ward preventing it) the plug may be
turned in either direction.

How
much tension is too much?
If
too much tension is applied to the plug,
the pins which reside in the chamber
will not move freely. Furthermore, the
bound pins will often restrict the picks
entrance into the plug. If this is the
problem release tension and insert the
pick, apply gradual tension until you
feel the pins binding slightly and
maintain that tension throughout the
picking process. If this is still too
much tension, gradually release
tension until the right tension is
attained. I cannot stress enough
the importance of proper tension,
improper tension is the primary reason
for failure in lock-picking and
destruction of tools.

What
locks can be picked ?
Wafer,
Pin, and Disk tumbler locks can be opened
using the Starter
Set.
Most
automobiles, have Disc tumbler
locks, (practice on Ford and Dodge).
Most
residential and commercial grade locks
as well as padlocks contain Pin
tumblers.
Most
desks, filling cabinets, glass
showcases, gun locks, tool boxes, pickup
truck cabs and combination safe knob
locks will open rather easily, as they
do not have many pins.

What
brands are difficult to pick ?
Assa,
